Tour of the Welsh Marches joins VSCC Welsh Weekend 2015 Programme
Thursday 03 September 2015
This year sees a new addition to the Club’s historic Welsh Weekend – the Welsh Marches Tour on Saturday 10 October, kindly organised by Tom Pellow (author of the Club’s new book, A Portrait of the Vintage Sports-Car Club, 1934-2014), which takes the place of the Navigation Rally in 2015.
In 1939, the Club held its first Welsh Weekend. On a Saturday in late March a mix of Edwardian and Vintage cars made their way to Presteigne by self-chosen routes of 200 miles, while on the Sunday, after a Concours and timed Hill Climb of half a mile for the older cars, the Vintage entrants enjoyed a short Reliability Trial.
Over the years the ‘Weekend’ has evolved and changed, with the Trial emerging as the dominant element, Driving Tests, Concours and, more recently, Navigational Rallies being held alongside at various times. This year the element of change continues, with the introduction of the Tour, designed to provide a road-based event for those Club Members who wish to take part in the Weekend but without the pressures of competition. All cars built before 1st January 1941 are eligible (no Buff Forms are required).
The route of approximately 80 miles will largely follow a selection of relatively unfrequented A and B roads, through deeply rural countryside and uplands with many memorable views. A “Road Book” will be provided, giving simple straightforward instructions that will require no previous navigational experience or expertise. Along the way there will be a variety of suggested visits to places of interest. These are expected to include several castles, a pair of museums, a water mill, a notable second hand bookshop, and a remarkable hardware store, redolent of the 1930s.
The entry fee of just £25.00 per car includes coffee at the Start and tea at the Finish for two persons, but extra tickets may be purchased for any additional crew members. Lunches will be available to purchase at the Dragon Hotel in Montgomery, the location of the Halfway Halt. To aid the catering arrangements on the day, you are asked to indicate on your Entry Form how many lunches and ‘extra’ coffees/teas at the Start/Finish will be required (both payable on the day to the hotel and at Signing-on respectively).
Entries close on Monday 28 September and there is a maximum of 40 cars so don’t miss out and submit your entry now. Download Supplementary Regulations and an Entry Form, the latter to complete and return to the VSCC (post/fax/email accepted) or use our online entry facility at the Event Page (CLICK HERE). Club Members must have a payment card registered with the Office to enter online.
If you have any questions, please contact the Competition Department on 01608 644777 (ext 4) or email comps@vscc.co.uk.
We hope you will support this new venture and encourage all to participate in the traditions of the Welsh Weekend and come and watch the Trial, or better still, marshal on the Sunday (contact the Comps Dept to volunteer).
Calling all VSCC Triallists….
Entries are also now open for the celebrated Welsh Trial element of the weekend. This stalwart two-day event in the VSCC calendar again returns to the town of Presteigne, which always welcomes the Club so warmly, where the Radnorshire Arms will again play host for the duration of the weekend.
As tradition, the event is open exclusively to Vintage cars, whose drivers will experience the thrill of competing on classic Trials sections such as Smatcher and eventually navigate their way on to the welcome sight of the Cwm Whitton farm complex, where the Sunday afternoon sections are based.
