Annual Trials Trophies 2013 : Update

Standings after the Welsh Trial (not including the Lakeland Trial) as we go into the Final Trials Event of 2013, the Cotswold Trial this Saturday 23 November.
The second half of the season opened with the Welsh Trial in mid-October. In Class 1, Donald Skelton took second place in his familiar Austin 7 Sports (we wonder when will his replacement Ulster show its face and form?) and increased his lead over David Golightly who appeared in his new Trials special based on a Ford Model T. Not yet fully shaken down, David dropped points on a couple of sections that his previous Model A Special would readily have cleared. Simon, still with his Austin 7 Ulster, did not have a successful day and drops down the table in favour of Stewart Rich, who continues to improve in his Austin 7 as the season goes on. Andrew Fox’s PVT Austin was ineligible for the Welsh so he drops off the leader board. Clear winner of Class 1 and the Harry Bowler trophy, Richard Houlgate (Austin 7) moves up the rankings and with an event less than the leaders must surely be candidate for a top spot at the end of the season following another successfull drive on the Lakeland Trial. Much depends on conditions for the Cotswold this Saturday; wet conditions and low scores will favour the current leaders.
There was a big entry for long chassis cars in the Welsh and no fewer than 14 standard cars started in Class 2a. With Paul Jeavons’ Vauxhall in serious trouble with clutch problems, Jonathan Miller (Chrysler) came through to win the Presteigne Trophy, ahead of a very creditable performance by Charlotte Collings (Bentley 3/4½). This increased Jonathan’s hold on the annual trophy table and he now heads it by almost 200 points, though John Higgs, in second place, has competed in one fewer events. Gaynor White had an excellent day in Wales, finishing fourth in the Ford Model A Saloon, no mean feat with its size and visibility, and jumps a number of places to be within the top ten.
Numbers in brackets indicate events counting. Trials competed are: Exmoor, Derbyshire, Herefordshire Scottish and Welsh.
In the Standard classes, no one approaches Charles Gillett’s Brescia efforts and he looks to maintain his top place in the short chassis cars without even entering the final two events. The ever-enthusiastic Dennis Bingham (Model A) is odds-on favourite to win the long chassis class as his nearest competitor, Roy Newton (also Model A), has completed one event fewer. Dennis’s consistent performances merit a top ten place in the overall annual ratings.
