The Herefordshire Trial

A Round-Up from a fantastic weekend…
The last event of Trials season for gaining points towards the championship was none other than The Herefordshire. What’s so great about the Herefordshire? Not only was there a variety of new hills for competitors to tackle, but this event spans over not just one day but a whole weekend.
I probably shouldn’t admit to this but Trialling had never been a form of motorsport on my radar prior to my involvement with the VSCC. However, this weekend I had the pleasure of bouncing in Ryan Goodyear’s Austin 7 Chummy on the Saturday, a car which he bought less than two months ago. Whilst it has its foibles (which he is in the process of improving), Ryan and myself were both surprised by the car’s pure determination, scrambling its way up all seven hills, even those we thought would be a mean feat on our earlier hill walk. The conditions were cool and dry, and the sun even made an appearance at points, which made for a beautiful day. However, it also meant that whilst we were able to stay competitive with far more capable cars on the dusty surfaces, on a few others we bogged down which scuppered our optimistic chances of reaching the top. We were travelling in a group of four Austin 7’s (three Chummy’s & one Ulster) which made the scenic drives across Herefordshire all the more splendid with views across both the Malvern Hills and the Wye Valley.
Sunday, although requiring slightly more thermal layers, was once again an absolute hoot with drivers taking on another six challenging hills. Conditions allowed everyone to stay competitive resulting in four drivers clearing all thirteen hills over the weekend.
Whilst I may have not seen the attraction for Trialling prior to Saturday, the ear to ear grin has not left my face since, so much so my jaw is starting to hurt. I can most definitely, wholeheartedly say I now understand this fantastic form of motorsport. The barriers to entry are low, it is extremely sociable and, of course, amazing fun! Now, in the meantime I better get back to looking at Trials worthy Austin 7’s…
