Success at Formula Vintage - Round 3 - Cadwell Park!

Monday 23 July 2018

The fabulous Formula Vintage - Round 3 took place at Cadwell Park on Sunday 22 July. Cadwell Park, often described as the Nürburgring, provided our racing drivers with some thrilling, and nail-biting racing.
The Circuit was packed with eager Spectators enjoying the displays and fantastic Vintage bands playing, the banks surrounding the track were buzzing as people marveled and became engrossed in the brilliant Racing that took place including the Garry Whyte Riley Handicap Race, the thrilling Frazer Nash Race, plus the triumphant return of the Intermarque Trophy.

The first Race kicked off with Dougal Cawley taking the honours in his 1929 GN/Ford Piglet, 8.40 seconds ahead of second placed Richard Iliffe in his 1934 Riley Elf and 15.88 seconds in front of Mark Gillies in his 1936 Aston Martin Speed Model. The Dougal Cawley/Piglet combination proved once again to be consistent and successful finishing third in both Race 7, the Frazer Nash Race and Race 9, the Intermarque Trophy Race.

In 2017, Eddie Williams who took the Geoghegan Trophy in his 1929 Frazer Nash Super Sports, not entered in the Race this year, the title passed onto William Mahany in his 1938 HRG Le Mans Model. Mahany pipped young driver Tom Waterfield to the win after Waterfield lost second gear chain on the last lap. William Mahany later went on to take second in Race 6, 28.08 seconds behind Christian Pedersen in his flying 1932 Austin 7 Special. Pedersen continued to fly around the track taking second behind Julian Grimwade in his 1934 Frazer Nash Single Seat in Race 9. Grimwade finished his day with another win, this time 2.81 seconds ahead of David Seber in his 1935 Wolseley Hornet Special.

The Garry Whyte Riley Handicap Race was another great spectacle, David Morley took the Trophy in his 1932 Riley Special 8.38 seconds ahead of Andrew Baker driving his 1930 Riley Brooklands. The 1937 Riley 12/4 Special driven by Alexander Hewitson, which was built from the ground up by young VSCC member Garry Whyte, continued to celebrate his memory in phenomenal fashion by grabbing fourth place and second fastest car on track.

The Spero & Voiturette Trophies Race saw the 'Drive of the Day' come from Angus Frost, driving Justin Maeers's 1929 Morgan Super Aero. Frost suffered a mechanical error early on into the race and had to pit, a quick tweak to the engine and back out on track he made up ground and time to finish an extremely creditable 6th, just 54 seconds behind the eventual winner, Christian Pedersen.

The return of the Intermarque Trophy Race saw the Frazer Nash's steal the win with an overall average speed of 83.97 mph, followed by the MG's and then the Austin's. The Frazer Nash's has 7 entrants into the Race, with the MG's bringing forward 6 and the Austin's a mere 2.

Never-before-seen at Cadwell Park, the VSCC ran a Trials demonstration in the woodland on the Paddock side of the Start/Finish Line footbridge. This demonstration featured a number of VSCC cars as well as special Trials motorcycles. The demonstration proved to be extremely popular, with many interested Spectators intriguingly watching on.
