Snippet Guide to Handicap Racing
Thursday 05 July 2018
Being one of the few Club’s that continue to hold Handicap Races regularly, we can’t help but get excited about these fascinating “tortoise and the hare” style events!
If you’re joining us at Cadwell Park on 22 July for Round 3 of this year’s Formula Vintage series, you can look forward to seeing 3 Handicap Races, including the Garry Whyte Riley Handicap Race. To keep you up to speed, we’ve put together a Snippet Guide to Handicap Racing...
The aim of a Handicap Race is to give every competitor an equal chance of winning – because so many of the VSCC cars are different in their speed capabilities, Handicap Races are great for the Club because they level out the playing field and make for some unpredictable and exciting Racing!
Each Competitor’s quickest lap time will be used to arrange the starting grid, with the slowest cars at the front of the grid and the fastest at the back. The Handicap Race will start with the drop of a Union Flag, which will send the first group of cars off to start the Race. The timekeeper will then continue to drop the Union Flag to start the Race for each of the remaining groups of Racers at the allocated times. The staggered Race start means that if each driver matches their fastest lap time, every competitor will cross the finish line at the same time – but this does not always work out!
The winner of the Handicap Race is not always the first driver and car across the line – the winner is the competitor who drove faster than their previously set fastest lap time.
