Gearing up for Formula Vintage – Round 1 – Silverstone

As we eagerly look ahead to the Club’s first Race Meeting of 2018 next month, let’s recap on last year’s exciting season with some of the series highlights...
Round 1
2017 saw the VSCC Race series take on a brand new lease of life as the newly rebranded Formula Vintage. The Formula Vintage opener saw fantastic weather conditions and over 300 Pre-war cars take to the tracks at the historic venue, plus a record breaking number of spectators through the gates of Silverstone over the course of the weekend. Featuring open access to the paddock, a stunning display from Bonhams, a dedicated Pre-war Car Park, a Concours, as well as an AutoSolo, the 18-Race event had plenty of action both on and off track.
Round 2
Round 2 of last year’s Formula Vintage took place at Oulton Park on Saturday 10 June and featured some 100 Competitors at the 11-race event, despite some wet weather.
The battle for the Oulton Park Trophy, was won by Dougal Cawley in his GN/Ford ‘Piglet’, after having set the fastest time of practice. Additional winners included Andrew Mitchell who won the Bill Phillips Trophy race, Tom Walker who claimed the Boulogne Trophy, and Dick Skipworth who won his 7th Hawthorn Spanish Trophy.
Round 3
Cadwell Park hosted Round 3 of Formula Vintage with 12 races, including the Geoghegan Trophy Race, the Shuttleworth, Nuffield and Len Thompson Trophies Race, the John Holland Trophy Race, the Spero and Voiturette Trophies Race, and the Melville Trophy Race.
Round 4
Mallory Park was host to Round 4 of Formula Vintage, which again saw over 100 competitors at the Leicestershire venue. 12 races took place at Mallory, including an F3 (500) race and the John Taylor Memorial Trophy Race for Formula Junior Racing Cars.
A Mallory favourite amongst spectators and Competitors alike is the Handicap Race for Edwardian Cars. Last year it was Roger Twelvetrees who took the Dick Baddiley Trophy in his Wolseley 16/20, and Richard Scaldwell who triumphed with the Edwardian Racing Trophy in his De Dietrich 130 HP Course.
Round 5
The finale of Formula Vintage took place at Snetterton in September 2017 and saw some damp conditions but Competitors refused to be rained off.
In the final round of the Owner Driver Mechanic Season, Iain Stewart won the Redgate Mug in his 1929 Morgan Super Aero. Additional trophy winners at Snetterton included Tony Lees in his 1925 AC/GN Cognac with the Vintage Seaman; and Duncan Ricketts in his 1933 Riley Dixon with both the Williams Monaco Trophy and the Bruton Trophy.
Having achieved the highest point score in a Pre-war car throughout the Formula Vintage series, Julian Grimwade was awarded the Motorsport Brooklands Memorial Trophy. The Longstone Tyres Racing Trophy was won by Justin Maeers, having achieved the highest score across the Race series in a Pre-war road worthy car.
Having completed a successful and enjoyable first year of Formula Vintage, we look forward to an exceptional Race series this year featuring a new addition to the series, the brand new Formula Vintage Festival at Donington Park.
