Celebrating Women of the VSCC - Q&A with Angela Jones
Monday 19 February 2018
Our next Wonder Woman of the VSCC is Angela Jones, who is one of our dedicated Marshals. Our Marshals and Volunteers are exceptionally important to the Club - without them there would be no events!
Which committee are you part of and what is your role?
I am part of the Marshalling/Volunteering Committee and was nominated at our first meeting to be the one to take the notes and produce the minutes.
How did you get involved with the VSCC and what attracted you to the Club?
I have been involved in Motorsport since the early 1970s. Initially modern Motorsport then a member of the Pre-War Austin Seven club for many years and competed in their Trials. Went to watch the Lakeland Trial one year and thought we would like to give it a go, the rest is history.
Motorsport is traditionally a male-orientated sport – what are your thoughts on this, and do you feel that it impacts your involvement in the Club?
I believe there are more women coming into Motorsport these days than there were perhaps 20 years ago. Some of my very best friends are other VSCC Ladies. In saying that I think the VSCC is still very male–orientated, despite having some wonderful lady Competitors and Marshals, and certainly speakers at dinners are geared towards the male contingent in the club. The main Committee certainly needs more women to balance it out, but I accept if women don’t want to join in and take part you can’t make them.
What do you enjoy the most about the VSCC?
Meeting up with friends for the weekend at events, and having a great laugh. I thoroughly enjoy the Marshalling duties I take on and having Hill Chief responsibilities on trials. It’s my way of giving something back to the Club.
Tell us about some of your VSCC highlights...
Being in an upturned trials car on the Exmoor trial was not something I would like to do again. My GP took some convincing as to why I was black and blue all over during what was, unfortunately, “BBC Battered Wives Week”. Harrogate Anniversary week in 2004 was one of the best - brilliant week – even with the rain and muddy conditions on the showground. I’ve also stood out on many occasions in the middle of January on a bitterly cold night and had to content with rain, hail, snow, ice and thick fog marshalling on the Measham Rally, great fun but we must be bonkers! Receiving the Don Grose Marshal’s Award in 2015 was a really proud moment.
What can we look forward to from the VSCC this year?
Another year of excellent events and competition, lots of fun and laughter and hopefully good weather.
